Mary Louise (Lou) Long
Lou is a senior at Arizona State University enrolled in an accelerated four-year bachelor’s and master’s degree program. In May of 2021, she will graduate with a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communication, with a focus in public relations, from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. She is also pursuing a certificate in marketing and sales from the W.P. Carey School of Business. In May of 2022, Long will complete a graduate degree in Mass Communication.
As a full-time Barrett Honors student, Long spends her time researching the role of empathy in corporate responses to COVID-19 (for her undergraduate creative project); working in Walter Cronkite’s Public Relations Lab; and interning at a multinational public relations and communications firm, BCW-Global. Long’s creative project is a year-long research study that will produce a comprehensive guide on how to implement empathy in crisis communications strategies similar to the Coronavirus pandemic. The Public Relations Lab is a professional environment that prepares students for real-world positions in the industry, post-graduation. At BCW-Global, Long supports the media relations team for the Census Bureau, by monitoring media, building media lists, and assisting with pitching and editorial efforts. Over the past three years at Cronkite, Long has held four internships and serves as the President of Arizona State University’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). Her studies and various positions allowed her to learn how to write press releases and contributed articles, develop PR and social media strategies, as well as track traditional and social media content for clients. While interning at Serendipit Consulting, a Phoenix-based PR and marketing company, Long secured two articles in the Wall Street Journal’s news and culture magazine, Noted. Long grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, and attended Xavier College Preparatory for high school. In 2020, Long and her family hiked the Grand Canyon from rim-to-rim. To train for this nearly 24-mile hike, Long spent many weekends hiking around the Valley. In her spare time, she enjoys trying new recipes and binge-watching shows on Netflix. |
